Lab 1a: Body Directional Terminology
PURPOSE:
To become aquainted with the terms used to describe the relative position of body parts, body sections
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Define the terms used to describe the relative position of body parts
2. Define the terms used to identify body sections and identify the plane along which a particular specimen is cut
PROCEDURE A: Relative Positions, Sections, and Regions
1. Read pages 16-18 in ‘Martini’, and Review the page Anatomical Directions.
2. Define the terms from the Anatomical Directions vocabulary list
3. Label figures 1.1 and place it in your Lab Notebook. Label the three planes. Label the directions as follows: Superior- red; Inferior- pink; Anteriori- blue; Posterior- light blue; Medial- green; Lateral- light green; Proximal- yellow (dark); Distal- orange
4. Complete Part A in your lab book
5. Complete Part B: Quiz on Directions I & II by examining the actual specimens provided. Take time to align the specimens anatomically so that you can identify directions correctly.
6. Complete Part C of the lab in your Lab Notebook.
7. As you complete the lab, Review the "Lab Objectives" from the handout and write a synopsis of the lab discussing the importance of standard position and directional terms. Discuss how planes relate to the concept of directions. Give three specific examples of the use of planes and these terms.
